Jesus and the jewish people ate a wide variety of fish due to the great availablilty of fresh seafood in Jerusalam's market place.
At the time of jesus, the average person would select meat only for special occasions. Meat would have been considered a main course set aside for times of festivity. Fish remains the staple food because it was less expensive and easier to obtain.
Fish is an excellent source of healthy protein, and it's low in saturated fats. In addition to this, most fish are naturally low in calories and are rich in healthy oils, vitamins and minerals .
Some people do not care to eat fish because of its fishy taste and smell. But it's worth learning to eat fish, even if you don't eat it regularly at first. Fish are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and potassium as well.
Put fatty fish on your menu, at least twice a week, says a new study. Researchers have found that eating fish, like salmon and tuna at least twice a week can help prevent a devastating eye disease -- the age-related muscular degeneration which is said to be the leading cause of blindness in the elderly.
Over time the back part of the eye can degenerate, causing the disease, which can also be triggered by new blood vessels growing and bleeding in the region. And, according to the study by Tufts University, the OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS found in fish offers protection against the eye disease as reported by British media.
For their study, the researchers questioned 3,000 people about their general diet and then monitored development of the condition over eight years. Half of the volunteers were given some form of daily supplement, including antioxidants such as vitamins C and E and beta-carotene.
The findings showed show that progression to both the dry and wet forms of advanced disease was 25 per cent less likely among those who ate a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids. And, those who took the antioxidants as well as zinc and beta-carotene were 50 per cent more likely to develop the advanced disease, according to the study published in the 'British Journal of Ophthalmology'.
According to some leading healthcare professionals, certain foods have been found to have a significant effect on mood, memory and other mental functions.
Fish, known as a BRAIN FOOD for its high selenium, may be one of them.Nutritionists believe that a lack of SELENIUM can cause some people to suffer from depression, fatigue and anxiety. Findings indicate that proper intake of selenium improves mood significantly.
Vitamin B12, A KEY IMMUNE SYSTEM BOOSTER, is found in cold water fish. Vitamin B12, or Cobalamin, may help prevent memory loss, impaired abstract thinking skills, and mental confusion.
Making wise food choices including fresh fish, can help prevent illness, including Alzheimers disease, by helping to block aluminium toxicity.
