There is so much pain in the world. Bigotry, poverty, captivity, disease. Through it all, God is trying to get our attention. Why do we find it so hard to let go of the monkey trap and reach out to Him?
What the monkey trap is?
The African tribesmen follow a cunning way to catch monkeys in the jungle to catch them alive unharmed for shipment to zoos. They make a small hole in the trunk of a tree and put their favorite food item groundnut into the hole and hide themselves. The monkey, attracted by the aromatic scent of the nuts, time and again the monkey comes along, sees the food and has to have it. After a while, he puts his hand into the hole with ease, grabs the groundnuts, and is now trapped. He is unwilling to let go of the groundnuts, despite the growing fear of being trapped. Even when the hunters show up to gather the caught monkey, he won’t let go of his prize.

And likewise, the Satan too has a cunningly devised game plan for each one of us to trick and get us fall into his trap. He knows our imperfections and always strikes at where we are weak at. He casts himself as the one who wants to give us unfettered freedom and pleasure, carefully masking his plan to steal, kill and destroy us. He even spins the loving laws of God by claiming that God’s boundaries are restrictive, simply intended to take all the fun out of living.
We may think we can deliberately sin in a limited way for a short period of time and get ourselves free. But remember even “Little” sins lead to greater and greater unrighteousness. Sin becomes the consequence of sin. We find ourselves entrapped and enslaved like the monkey refusing to loosen its hold.
When we buy into Satan’s damaging lies, we will eventually find ourselves empty & broken - sidelined in our journey with God. Our only defense against the evil one is to constantly listen for the voice of Jesus as we pray and study His words.
Sin enslaves us, controls us, dominates us, and dictates our actions. But when we yield ourselves in obedience to Christ and call upon Him for strength to do His will, we are released (John 8:36)
Will you let go of the monkey trap and let God take control?
