There is an “unusual town” called
Agua de Dios, near Columbia. It is characterized by dusty streets, brick
houses, a large Church dominating the town’s centre and in the plaza there is a
peculiar lifesize statue of a man playing a piano.
The piano is made of stone; the man
is sculpted in metal. The pianist’s fingers flutter happily over the key board,
and his face aglow with an everlasting smile on it. No one could have seen such
a smiling statue anywhere! It is the statue of Luis.
A. Calvo who had written some of
Columbia’s favorite songs. “Is that the peculiarity
of that town?” you may ask. Yes - But there is still more, Agua
de Duis had been a leper colony till late fifties. In those days, when leprosy
was thought to be a deadly disease, anyone who was found to have the sickness,
was sent there and was cut off from family and friends, the rest of their
lives. And the fact is Luis. A. Calvo was one such person afflicted with
leprosy. He was sent to the town and lived there as a leper!
Dear friends, what a great lesson we
learn from this extraordinary musician! The whole town of Agua de Dios is proud
of him – not only because he was a great pianist, but because of the unfading
beauty of his smile which brought joy and courage to the lepers of his time and
also continues to motivate thousands of people in that town till date.
Luis. A. Calvo had every
reason to mourn and cry over his sickness but he was able to bring out
beautiful music from pain and humiliation.
Let us also not brood over our
misfortunes or grumble about our weaknesses or complain of our discomforts. But
let us soar high above our problems, and look at our lives in a positive way.
Let us not be
self–centered but let us cheer others up and bring happiness in their lives,
besides ours !!!
